Here's the initial thread discussing the features....
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41823
And here are some photos of it mounted to the stand I retrofitted for it:
*disclaimers*
- these pictures suck. Looking at the monitor with my bare eyeballs....is gorgeous!
- the photo with the slate is from a shoot we are shot last weekend. This is a DAILY DVD i am showing you. The image is stretching because I am taking pictures of the Monitor in "full screen" mode, but the video is really recorded to the DVD "letterboxed". This weekend, I will employ this new HD field monitor on a real set, and record my Dailies in "Squeezed" from now on, now that I have a widescreen field monitor. *smile* (i'll have the unit photographer take pictures of us using it on a real set and post them as well.
- The gorgeous Picture-in-Picture girl is Kellie Madison (writer, actress). We shot that yesterday during a Z1U vs. DVX test shoot for a movie we will be shooting mid April. Needless to say, we'll be using the Z1 *smile*. For this PIP/POP/PBP example, The DVX tape is being played back in another sony camera.

PHOTOS:
1. Here is the new setup on the stand. pretty cool huh? Guess what I used??................ A HEAVY DUTY Music Sheet Stand I picked up from Guitar Center on Sunset Blvd. *smile* It's PERFECT. More then strong enough, more then sturdy enough, collapses very small, can be set very low, and raises more then tall enough:

2. Here's the backside of the monitor/stand. As you can see, I neatly installed the power cable and Component cables inside the back to remain permanent, so easy hook-up and mobility is achieved when on set:

3. Here's a sideview of all the hookups. There are even more on the bottom where the components come from:

4. Here is a couple Picture-IN-Picture examples for ya. notice the smaller image in the upper right hand corner. it can be adjusted to 3 different sizes, can be moved to any corner of the monitor, and can be additionally moved around anywhere I want the image in its quadrant. ALSO, THE COO PART...it can be set for 'transparency' levels, so that you can see through it! *smile* in this example, it is set at 33% transparency:

http://www.beout.com/hidef/images/hdmonitor/pip2.jpg
5. Here is the Picture-OUTSIDE-Picture example. It has 3 modes. 1-what you see, 2-alternates 3 rotating images down the right side, 3- alternates 12 images around a center main image. SInce I dont use this for flipping TV channels, only #1 is worthy of field usage. Only thing that sucks is, the big MAIN image will only be shown in 4:3. There's no way to make it 16:9. The smaller image is however 16:9 OR 4:3:
http://www.beout.com/hidef/images/hdmonitor/pop.jpg
6. And finally, here is the Picture-BY-Picture. VERY COOL and extremely useful for DUAL CAMERA SHOOTS. You can basically monitor both feeds on one field monitor. Only thing that sucks is the LEFT IMAGE is only stretched to the top, no other settings but stretched (that sucks but is doable), and the RIGHT IMAGE is only 4:3, no 16:9 for the right side...that sucks too, but is doable:

I hope you enjoyed this little tour, as I like to share my experiences with my online friends who do what I do. I chose this monitor SPECIFICALLY for the PIP/POP/PBP features and its 1280x768 resolution and it takes my Z1U's 1080i component in no problem. If you dont need this stuff then there are many others for less. I paid $456 bucks for this puppy direct from Dell off eBay. I recommend it.
Remember, all of these images can be "SWAPPED" with a flick of the remote.

Shannon, you f*cking rock man. Can you link us to the direct place you bought it? I looked and the only place I found was Dell itself and it was a lot more than $456!

Thanks for sharing..
Are you going to make a shade for it? The external light hitting the screen definately sqeews (is that spelling right?) what you're really seeing being captured.

Why is it there are black bars on the top and bottom of the screen? Is the Dell not true 16X9?
ShannonRawls

Christopher,
Yes, I am going to make a shade for it. But that picture is telling a lie. Actually, it was crystal clear with no skewing whatsoever. What is on that monitor is (to me) perfect rendition of what is being captured to the tape. I ran color correction tests for about 6 hours at my house earlier this week.
Freak,
WHat black bars? I think your looking at the plastic molding. That monitor is short and wide, true 16x9, image fills the entire screen.

Shannon,
In the following picture it sure looks like there is blacks bars on the top and bottom. Maybe it's just me. Probably is.

Hi Shannon!
Why did you choose that display instead of the Dell 20.1" UltraSharp 2005FPW? both have PiP and PBP buit I think it's lighter (no speakers at its sides)
Also the 2005FPW has 1680x1050 vs 1280x768 resolucion so its closer to 1080i and has a 12-16ms response ratio Vs 25ms from the W1900.
also: Where u able to display live HD or SD through component? Which was its real displying resolution?
How did you manage to power this display on the field?
Best regards,
Luis

What type of cables are required to connect the Z1 to a DELL 2005FPW or a DELL W1900 creating true HD playback?
Also, Shannon,
What are you using to record audio for your shoot?

Luis,
I chose the W1900 because the 2005FPWis flat out ugly and too computer monitorish for me. I wanted a HD Television tht had specs worthy of what I need. ms response ratios and all that mean nothing really for digital video. I am not using this for games or computer use. Currently I have this monitor setup as a SWEET looking television in my house....couldn't do that with a ugly 2005FPW computer display. and yes, LIVE HD via component. I power it in the field using AC power ofcourse. *smile* We have generators on deck in case of remote shooting.
yitzhach, regular run of the mill component cables (3 rca cables) I have a 75' snake that I use. I record audio directly to camera. DOn't get bent outta shape by googling the internet and reading reports from these scientist claiming audio isn't good. Z1 Audio is SWEET. Once captured, I immediately create an uncompressed .wav from my project audio. Nothing loss. I do have a backup PD-4 at my disposal and a Fostex MR-8, but I never use them unless I need more then 2 channels to record to.

hi Shannon!
thx for the info though I have 1 more q:
At Dell site they state for the W1900:
"Analog; SDTV & HD ready; NTSC (Americas & Japan models) or PAL/SECAM (European models) TV Color system; Closed Captioning, Parental Control, SAP & Teletext ready"
You said your model accepted also PAL hd signaling? because I am looking for a model to accept both 1080i @ 50 AND 60 fps. but on the Dell site appears to be two different versions.
thx
Luis

Hi once again!
Does anyone know if the 2005FPW or the new 2405FPW (24") accepts BOTH HD PAL/NTSC-like (50/60Hz @ 1080i) signals through COMPONENT or just the 60Hz ones?
thx!
Luis
